David Hooker

Trauma coaching for Military & Veterans

My name is David Hooker. I am a lifetime resident of the Northwest, spending the bulk of my earlier years in Eugene, Oregon. I have experienced my share of abuses, ridicule, and torment from classmates, shipmates, customers, and family. I am a gregarious introvert, meaning I love to spend time with people, revitalizing my spirit through solitude and silence.

I am a Navy Submarine Veteran. I served 4 years aboard FBM (Fleet Ballistic Missile) submarines in the North Atlantic (who knows exactly where) during the Cold War. In addition to my regular duties, I created and lead Bible studies and served as an open ear to those who needed a friend or wise counsel. Both out at sea and onshore, shipmates looked to me for the wisdom of God, and I did my best to provide it for them.

Contemplative Counseling is a way of being. It is a way of life that puts us in a place to hear what both the client and the Spirit of God are speaking. Contemplative Counseling (or coaching) takes an intricate balance of being present with the client while at the same time working with the Holy Spirit to know what He is saying about the client’s situation and can coach us to help the client.

Coaching vs Counseling

Counseling and coaching were established from the same foundations of Adler, Rogers, and other psychotherapists. The basics of both build on those foundations and branch slightly to accomplish collaborative ends. Where counseling works from a point in the past to help the client heal from past trauma, coaching works from the
premise that the client is reasonably healthy and functioning in life and wants focused guidance and direction as well as being held accountable to achieve goals the client has set. Counseling is counselor directed whereas coaching is client directed.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Questions we often asked

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like something needs to change—but you’re not sure how to move forward—that’s when therapy can help. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to be open to the process.

Each session is 50-60 minutes. We’ll decide together how often to meet—typically weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your needs and schedule.

Without insurance, therapy sessions typically range from $150 to $275, depending on the therapist you choose to work with.

We understand that cost can be a concern, and we don’t believe it should stand in the way of getting support. Everyone deserves access to quality mental health care. Through our advanced clinical training program, we’re able to offer therapy options when insurance or standard rates aren’t the right fit.

We work with you to find the most effective approach for your needs. In your first session, your therapist will discuss a personalized plan and estimated timeline. Therapy length varies based on your goals and the issues you’re addressing.

I use an integrative approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and psychodynamic methods. But really, my approach is about meeting you where you are and tailoring our work to what you need most.
